The Maker Reflect is a compact reflectance sensor featuring an infrared (IR) LED and a phototransistor. It works by emitting IR light onto a surface and measuring the reflected light. The sensor outputs an analog voltage—the more IR light reflected, the lower the voltage produced.

Commonly used in line-following robots, it detects white surfaces (which reflect more IR) better than black. But its utility goes beyond line tracking. It’s also great for:

• Edge detection in Sumo robots

• Wall sensing in maze-solving robots

• Object presence detection

• Rotary encoder applications

Measuring just 18.1mm x 8.4mm x 4.2mm (excluding header pins), this sensor fits into tight spaces. The centered mounting hole allows for front-most positioning, which is especially beneficial for precise detection in competitive robotics like Sumo bots.
