It features five microstepping resolutions: full, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth steps—enabling smoother and more precise motor control. The built-in translator simplifies operation: a single pulse on the STEP pin advances the motor by one microstep, eliminating the need for complex control logic or phase sequencing.

The A4988’s internal chopper control automatically selects between slow and mixed decay modes to reduce motor noise, improve accuracy, and minimize power loss. In mixed decay, the current begins with fast decay and transitions to slow decay—enhancing performance in dynamic applications.
